Most business rely on bright idea, unique brand, eye catching design
Intellectual Property law, stop people violating your idea
4 different areas:

Copyright- can automatically exists in documents, photos, websites, and maps. Protected for free, lasts 70 years after lifetime. If you share it with somebody else, they will get the copyright unless its specifically stated they don’t.

Trademark- protecting brands, applied to name, logo or both, renewed every 10 years

Design rights- aren’t expensive, covers across the UK, if you don’t register them they can come free and automatic.


Patents- lasts 20 years, registering is complicated and expensive, will be a good investment though.

Freedom of Information Act

Data Protection Act
Uk law says all businesses in the Uk strictly follow 8 principles. 4000 pieces of our information is stored in 1000 different places each week and is obtained by 1000 different businesses. 
8 principles:
requires the consumers consent for data
should be kept for the reason that it was collected
kept accurate
kept up to date
kept as long as needed
should be kept available to consumers  
processed securely in the UK

Copyright Law-1988
originally had nothing to do with big publishing firms and films
The law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artist works, sound recordings, broadcasts and films, the rights to control the ways their material may be used.

Libel
Libel is when you write something untrue and inaccurate about someone, most likely happen in newspapers, magazines and websites.
Embargo- Secret
causing serious harm to reputation, relationship, ruining the standing in there community

Slander
When you say something untrue and inaccurate about someone.
Example- A case of when a Policeman accused subway worker of drugging his drink, it is Slander as he had an interview and personally said these accusations which in the end turned out to be false.

Human Rights Act
Journalists don't have to give away there sources and can be kept anonymous.
Limits pre production time, money
