Target Audiences

Target Audience Definition- A specific group of people within a market who are interested in/need a particular product, service or media form. This group has been segmented using demography.
Demographic:
Age
Gender
Ethnicity
Class- higher, middle , lower
Race

Creating a media product that is made intentionally to appeal to a specific audience/market
NRS Social grade:

Psychographics:
To target what their audiences would typically go for.



Geo-demographics
geography + demographics
where you live?
spending power?
jobs available?


Quantitative audience research:
Quantitative research is when companies gather lots of information from lots of people, this could be by email, face to face etc. This is in place to find out how to make the product appeal to their target audience.
Quantitative date is more numerical, graphs+charts
Qualitative data is more wordy and more in depth

Socio-Economic Status:
To predict behaviour based on how much someone earns, where they live and their type of education. This data helps to find an estimate to what influences this person may have.

Mainstream Audience:
The majority of people like the same things

Alternative Audience
People that like things outside the box, or the second best thing
This usually grows into the mainstream audience as it becomes more popular

Niche Audience
Have unique interests
Small part of a social culture

Why is it important to break down tv audiences into age groups?
1) Kids 4-11: Higher production budget = more views
Less production budget = less views
toys and lego are the dominant products for kids
2)  ABC1 Men (NRS Social Grade): To know what to show on which days, e.g. sports on weekends as ABC1 men don't have time in the week to watch it.
